Free Radicals: The Enemy of Youth

Free Radicals: The Enemy of Youth

What are free radicals? Free radicals are electron hungry molecules that are in search of electrons to steal from healthy cells. After free radicals claim an electron from a cell, the cell can no longer function and dies. Free radicals damage the building blocks that keep the skin firm and wrinkle free. In other words , free radicals are the enemy of youth.

I guess this means that we are all doomed right?! Not at all! It’s very important to understand the problem first before making a plan to counteract it. We do know through studies that free radicals can be neutralized in the body and reducing their inner dominance can ultimately slow down the aging process along with age related health issues. If you are serious about slowing down your own aging, then you might want to consider including these power nutrients into your anti-aging routine. You can include these power house actives in your diet as well as in your skincare. We recommend both methods for the extra reinforcement.

Coenzyme Q10 is a lipid‐soluble antioxidant which is crucial for cellular energy production and overall cell life. According to the National Center of Biotechnology "skin as the outermost human organ is in direct contact with the environment and is, therefore, exposed to external stress factors. To combat resulting damages, cutaneous cells are constantly involved in tissue regeneration and repair, processes that require a high amount of energy and a well‐regulated cellular metabolism. With increasing age ,however, energy production as well as mitochondrial activity decline". According to scientific studies, topical application of CoQ10 does in fact increase ubiquinone (CoQ10) levels within the skin layers and decreases free radical damage that helps dramatically reduce the aging process.

Vitamin C- is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize and remove oxidants, such as those found in environmental pollutants and after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Excessive exposure to oxidant stress via pollutants or UV radiation is associated with depleted vitamin C levels. Several studies have shown that vitamin C levels are much lower in aged and photo-damaged skin. Vitamin C has also been linked to playing a big role to the production of collagen synthesis.

Ferulic Acid- Plays a key role in a plant's self preservation, reinforcing it's cellular wall strength and protecting it from environmental damage. In vivo testing has shown Ferulic Acid to be highly effective as a topical anti-oxidant. What makes it even more substantial is it ability to extend the power of other anti-oxidants including the very unstable ascorbic acid (vitamin C in it's pure form). In fact, Ferulic Acid when added to a vitamin C formula increases it's photo protective properties by 8x.

Alpha Lipoic Acid- Naturally found in the mitochondria of cells, ALA contributes to cellular energy production. Often referred to as the "universal antioxidant" because it is both water and fat soluble (easily absorbed through the lipid layers of the skin) making it one of the most powerful anti-aging actives available. It's antioxidant properties are so powerful, like 400x more powerful than both Vitamin C and Vitamin E (both very known and common antioxidants).

Because MAXDAHLIA is well aware of the super powers of these actives, we wanted to add them all together in one formula. We did a little experiment to show the power of our new serum Cell Active Ferulic C + E. We have all probably noticed how quickly apples turn brown after cutting into one. The browning is physical evidence of the apple oxidizing. To conduct this experiment, we applied Cell Active to one side of the the apple, leaving the other 3 sides without. The result: 7 hours after you can see the dramatic difference between the 2 sides. The serum side still looks fresh and bright while the non serum side does not.

Hope this information helps you on your journey to a healthier, more vibrant you. Remember when buying skincare, we always encourage everyone to read the ingredient listings.
